So a bit of a run down.
The big yellow one I have had for a while it gets the dodgy knives You know you when go to someone’s place and they hand you a $5 kitchen knife and ask you to touch it up. It works well enough but I just don’t like tungsten carbide drag sharpeners they just rip the blade up to much.
The smaller Black, Smiths one with the fold out diamond rod works the same but is a better buy, one from the compact angle and with the diamond rod for serrations.
The large black thing to the left is a double sided diamond paddle it has a small tool platform and a hook groove. I really like this, being double sided allow the quick removal on better quality knives that have had a hard life. Coupled with my ( Spyderco) 204 these two do most my away sharpening. (more…)

I have a several questions I ask everybody when selling bags.

Who is the bag for? Men and women sleep at different temps so what will be suitable for you normally isn’t always good for your partner.

Last weekend ( 20th June) I was invited out to help a local Cadet unit ( the leader is an old mate of mine)

I ran the session on camp ovens ( Dutch, cast iron) and a simultaneous session on safe use of a Block splitter ( to feed the coals for the ovens )

We did a couple of cakes and then 8 chooks ( chickens) in 6 Dutch ovens and one large Bedourie oven.

I had about 190 kids attended my bit all of them got to swing the block splitter (Fiskars power axe, some of the girls could barely lift it) Thanks to Mors and “Bushcraft” I got them to do it on their knees. They all left with the same number of toes they started with.

9 Must Haves For First Time Campers
By Suzette Gutierrez

Are you are going camping for the first time? If you are, then the last thing you want is to carry a backpack full of things you don’t need. Aside from bringing the usual tent, sleeping bags, mats, blankets, and personal stuff, what else do you need to bring?

The following list will help you know what you should bring when camping. It is not an exhaustive list, but it gives you an idea of some necessary items that all campers must have.

1.	Compass and a map of your campsite area. First of all, you must know how to use a compass and a map. It is important to bring a compass and a map of the area where you will be camping in case you get lost.

2.	Matches. Be sure to keep your matches in a waterproof container so they won’t get wet when it rains.

3.	Flashlight and camping lantern with extra batteries. Choose those that are light and not bulky so they won’t crowd your backpack, and always bring spare batteries. Good camping lanterns and flashlights have batteries that last a long time.

4.	Stove or cooking kit. You need something for cooking food and heating water. Many sites prohibit campers from building open fires, especially in the summer.

5.	Water purifier tablets. You will need these in case your water runs out and you need to drink the water available in your camping area.

6.	Insect repellent. This is a must. You wouldn’t want insects to make a feast out of you when you’re camping! This will also keep harmful insects at bay.

7.	Pocket knife. A pocket knife always comes in handy and can be used in a lot of things.

8.	First-aid kit and medicines. Your backpack should contain a first-aid kit. And if you are taking medication regularly, don’t forget to bring your medicines. Remember that you will be spending a few days away from convenience stores and from the comfort of your home.

9.	Small tool kit. This should contain some essential tools like a mirror, a small roll of duct tape, a whistle or any kind of signaling device, and about 50 feet of nylon rope.

There you have it, a list of the important things you need to bring when camping. You won’t have to be confused about what to pack as you go on your first camping trip. You don’t have to carry a heavy backpack full of things you don’t need. And you don’t have to wonder if you’ve brought everything that you need to bring.

All you have to remember are these nine basic must haves: compass and map, matches, light, stove or cooking kit, water purifier tablets, insect repellent, knife, first-aid kit, and a tool kit for signaling devices and other important materials. All campers should have these in their bags. They are important for safety, convenience, and of course an enjoyable first camping experience. Just follow this list and you’ll be set to go.

Why People Enjoy CampingBy Jeff Marshall

Why People Enjoy Camping
By Jeff Marshall

Many people go camping for different reasons. Think about why it is you like to go camping. The odds are it will be on this list below. Take a look at this list and see if you can find your main reason.

1. Get away from the daily grind of the workplace and life. Camping affords you with an option to get away from all those indoor activities: no phones to answers, reports to get done, or fires to put out.

2. Sleep out underneath the stars. One thing most campers all agree on is the value in sleeping out underneath the stars. While out camping, you are able to see the stars much better away from the lights of the city, this provides for a great view and a memorable night.

3. See a sunrise. This awe inspiring event is great anywhere. However, it takes on extra special meaning when tent camping within nature as you wake up with the birds, animals, and trees to see a new day come to light.

4. Get some fresh air. The opportunity to breathe in some clear mountain air or the fresh air of a forest is great especially if you are used to the smog, grime, and ozone issues of the city.

5. See a lush green forest full of life and animals. Seeing the forest in full bloom in spring or summer makes it easy to understand the value in little things and the wonder of life on earth.

6. For the young ones, smores and campfire stories. We may all get older, but our experiences with smores and great campfire stories stay with us up through adulthood. It is great to be able to share these with the future generations.

7. See if they can survive as their distant ancestors did. Testing your wits and survival skills is a great way to prove your value to yourself. After an attempt at using your survivals, whether successful or not, you will find that you walk a bit taller and prouder heading back home.

8. Tradition and Habit. Much like everything else in life, some people go camping out of habit. If they grew up with a family that went camping often, it is only natural for them to continue with tradition.

9. Adventure: Visit places you have never been before. This curiosity as a kid does not die off as you still get a thrill about climbing a hill or exploring a cave or a new trail.

10. Spend quality time with family and friends. Sharing a campsite in a familiar or unfamiliar area with no outside distractions, can make for a great way for family and friends to spend time together. The relaxed environment of a campsite allows for people to let down their guard and be good to each other.

Was your main reason on the list? If it wasn’t, don’t be surprised. With more and more people camping each year, it should not shock you to know that there are plenty of reasons to want to go camping.
